The government has pledged £40,000 in funding for low-carbon car clubs, which provide access to green vehicles for short periods of time.
Transport minister Norman Baker said the initiative is part of a wider effort to achieve a more sustainable transport sector.
He said each car club vehicle can effectively take 24 private cars off the road, leading to substantial savings in CO2.
These savings are even greater since vehicles in the programme typically emit 33 per cent less CO2 than the average car.
To date, car club membership has reached 127,114 and three-quarters of the vehicles are located in London.
Commenting on the announcement, the capital’s mayor Boris Johnson said: “I welcome all extra support for these cracking clubs, which are becoming indispensable to their thousands of members.”
According to Car Plus, the national charity supporting car club development, several types of driver can benefit from the scheme.
These include people who own a car but run up a mileage of less than 8,000 miles a year and businesses that use pool cars or staff’s own vehicles.
