SAVEX, the retail exhibition taking place this year between February 11 – 14, 2010 and April 29 – May 1, 2010 at the Airport Expo Centre in Dubai, has achieved the distinction of being the first Business-To-Consumer exhibition in this region to achieve Carbon Neutral status. When the Vancouver Games commence next Friday, Coca-Cola is aiming for its own gold medal of sorts: its first zero-waste, carbon-neutral Olympics sponsorship. The beverage giant hopes to take sustainable event planning to a new level with drink bottles made from 30 percent plant-based materials, delivered by hybrid cars and electric carts to cafés decked out in furniture that’s made from pine-beetle-salvaged wood.

What do Nike, REI, the Vancouver Olympics, and the Washington state government have in common? They’ve all promised to eliminate their impact on the climate by going “carbon–neutral.” REI aims to have zero output of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide by the year 2020. But since REI set the zero–impact goal, its emissions have been heading rapidly in the opposite direction.

It is notoriously difficult to move a muscle without creating a carbon penalty, and mitigating this can be a full-time obsession (as evidenced by No Impact Man, noimpactproject.org). As if our per capita carbon footprint wasn’t big enough at 9.7 tonnes each every year (think of it as six hot-air balloons full of CO2) this winter’s cold weather could cause it to swell. In the absence of any meaningful low-carbon power generation system, we retreat to burning huge quantities of coal to fulfil increased power demand. Coal use explains why Australians weigh in with a thunderous annual output of 20.5 tonnes of CO2 per person.
