South Canterbury’s district councils could be in line for a share of a multibillion-dollar compensation package for the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
Under the ETS, landowners who fell more than two hectares of trees planted before 1990 will incur a fee if they do not replace them. However, all post-1990 forests can qualify for carbon credits once harvested.

The global carbon market will be worth €121 billion ($170bn) in 2010, up 33% on last year, according to a recent report by Point Carbon, the leading independent provider of market intelligence, news, analysis, forecasting and advisory services for the energy and environmental markets. The report, Outlook for 2010 and Beyond, also predicts that traded volumes will increase by only 5% on 2009, to a total of 8.4 billion metric tons (gigatons or Gt) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e).
