CUSTOMERS have been invited to pay for a wine company’s carbon footprint by buying wine and then nominating where they want a tree planted.
South Australian winery Banrock Station says its customers can plant a virtual tree anywhere in the world along with a personalised message.
It says customers register their purchase of any Banrock Station wine at www.banrockstation.com.au/plantatree, choose their location and let the forest grow.
While the customer chooses a virtual location, Banrock and its partner in the venture, Carbon Conscious Ltd, will plant real trees in WA’s wheatbelt.
Carbon Conscious has Federal Government approval to supply low-cost carbon credits to Australian companies which are expected to have mandatory liabilities under the upcoming Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme.
The Banrock Station Plant A Tree carbon offset initiative will plant a maximum of 10,000 trees.
Carbon Conscious CEO, Peter Balsarini, expects 2000 tonnes of CO2-equivalent will be stored from the initiative.
“These trees will be permanently established, assisting to reduce the salinity of the land and resist wind erosion,” he says.
“We are thrilled to have the support of this recognised global wine brand, Banrock Station, in our fight against climate change.”
The launch of the initiative coincides with the rollout of Banrock Station’s lightweight glass bottles which are 27 per cent lighter than standard glass bottles and during manufacture, have reduced energy use, carbon dioxide and water use.
