Farmers should own soil carbon, says report

| Sourced From |

A Victorian Parliamentary committee report has found farmers should own the carbon in their soil.

The report recommends that carbon sequestration rights be clarified under Victorian law.

Environment and Natural Resources Committee chair John Pandazopoulos says that’s needed so that farmers can make money from storing carbon in their soil.

“The carbon is potentially a mineral,” he says.

“Normally when we look at mining, we say that a mineral resource is owned by government on behalf of the community.

“What we have highlighted is that government really needs to decide, and our view would be in this particular case is the carbon, because it is in soil, should be the property owner’s right and value.”
