In the Canadian province of , the government has decided to set aside Canadian $4 billion for carbon capture and storage programs. The money may also be used to promote the usage of public transport so that Alberta can reduce its CO2 emissions.
The government will keep ; the money is expected to come from the budget surplus previously estimated at C$1.6, but would be significantly more due to the increased royalties Alberta will get from increased oil prices.
"We’re reducing the impact of industrial emissions with carbon capture and storage and investing in public transit to reduce the impact from our tailpipes," stated.
In Alberta, oil exploitation projects and coal-fired electricity producing plants are responsible for huge amounts of GHG emissions and environmental watchdogs are calling for emission reductions. , the largest power company in Alberta, is considering a carbon-capture program, which may cut emissions by a million tones per annum.
