19 Aug 2009 – Dr Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, and Dr Juergen Ruettgers, State Premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, officially put into operation the pilot scrubbing plant for power station flue gases together with Werner Stump, Chief Executive of the Rhein-Erft District, and the Chief Executive Officers Dr Juergen Hambrecht (BASF SE), Professor Dr Wolfgang Reitzle (Linde AG) and Dr Juergen Grossmann (RWE AG) at the Coal Innovation Centre of RWE Power in Niederaussem.

Germany’s grand coalition government has reportedly agreed to a scaled-down draft law on carbon dioxide storage after conservatives objected to some of the measures.

“We’ve reached an agreement,” a coalition source said to Reuters on Friday (9 June), referring to the carbon capture and storage (CCS) law.

European car ads are always mentioning how many grams of CO2 a car emits because more than twelve European countries tax drivers based on those emissions. Germany, home to a cadre of automakers for which CO2 parsimony is not a prime consideration, has held out from the carbon dioxide taxation scheme, until now. The leading government coalition has finally agreed on a plan to tax CO2 output.
