19 Aug 2009 – Dr Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, and Dr Juergen Ruettgers, State Premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, officially put into operation the pilot scrubbing plant for power station flue gases together with Werner Stump, Chief Executive of the Rhein-Erft District, and the Chief Executive Officers Dr Juergen Hambrecht (BASF SE), Professor Dr Wolfgang Reitzle (Linde AG) and Dr Juergen Grossmann (RWE AG) at the Coal Innovation Centre of RWE Power in Niederaussem.

Dell, the world’s second largest computer manufacturer announced on Wednesday that they have attained 100% carbon neutrality as far as energy use is concerned. The Texas-based computer giant had pledged last year that they would become carbon neutral by end of 2008 but has been able to meet its target with five months to spare.
Dell uses renewable sources of energy to meet its power needs, which being limited in supply is able to take care of twenty per cent of its energy requirements. The rest of the eighty per cent is from regular sources, but is offset through verified emission reductions and renewable energy certificates. The company has also been able to rein in its energy usage by five per cent through installation of energy efficient systems which translates to annual savings to the tune of $3 million.
Dell is also going to undertake investments in wind power in U.S., China and India. Furthermore, it has joined hands with Conservation International to work towards protecting the rainforests in Madagascar.
