North Metro Fire Rescue wants to help remove the mystery about the Colorado Carbon Monoxide Alarm law that went into effect on July 1, 2009. Questions about this bill can be addressed by Life Safety Educator Jeff Dorrell at 720.887.0404 ext. 2261 and groups of ten or more can request a presentation for their HOA, renters group, civic group, or property management team.
Beginning on July 1, Colorado State law mandated that any rental homes, condos, or apartment complexes that have fuel-fired appliances or an attached garage shall require carbon monoxide alarms. The law goes on to state that carbon monoxide alarms will also be required in single-family homes or multi-dwelling properties (i.e. condominiums, apartment buildings) when placed on the market for sale (regardless if it is a new construction home or an existing property).
“It is important for homeowners and property managers to note the specific requirements for installation of carbon monoxide detectors as well,” explains Wendy Forbes, North Metro Public Information Officer. “An operational alarm is required to be installed within fifteen feet of the entrance to each room that will be used for sleeping purposes.” Citizens should read the manufacturer’s instructions for proper placement and installation in order to receive the best results from each device.
