Opinion: Billions at stake in carbon trading scheme


South Canterbury’s district councils could be in line for a share of a multibillion-dollar compensation package for the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).

Under the ETS, landowners who fell more than two hectares of trees planted before 1990 will incur a fee if they do not replace them. However, all post-1990 forests can qualify for carbon credits once harvested.
