REITERATING ITS commitment for a cleaner and environment friendly industrialisation, the Orissa government has launched a unique CDM project for Sponge Iron Industries in the state which are being blamed for massive pollution. The state has also claimed to be the first in the country to use the project in this sector.

The CDM project will attempt to reduce 8 million tonnes equivalent of Carbon Dioxide(CO2) in the programme cycle. It will be made operational in 20 sponge Iron units in the state. This was disclosed to the public during the national workshop on Cleaner production and CDM, on Thursday (September 10) at Bhubaneswar, by IPICOL CMD Suresh Pattnaik.

Speaking on this occasion, Ashok Choudhury, Deputy Director OREDA said that, the state government is promoting the use of renewable energy. The state owned agency has allotted eight bio-mass projects of five to twenty megawatt capacity and is currently analysing eighteen more proposals.

On the other hand the agency has received seven to eight proposals for setting up solar power plants. Among these, the projects proposed by Sahara and Moser Baer have already been cleared by the State level Technical Committee (STC) headed by the Secretary Science and Technology. The proposed mega solar power plant by Lanco at Baranga is currently under active consideration.
