Qatar (Doha) – Qatar has taken initial steps towards finding solutions to environmental and energy challenges with the announcement of the Doha Carbon & Energy Forum (Forum) as Qatar Petroleum, Qatar Foundation and ExxonMobil have joined together to co-organize the Forum, which will be held in November 2010.
On the occasion of the announcement of the Forum, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy and Industry, Chairman of Qatar Petroleum, Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah said “Qatar is the largest LNG exporter in the world. Therefore it is our goal to become one of the worlds leaders in promoting the use of Natural Gas as it is the cleanest burning fossil fuel while utmost to protect the environment. I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for her support for this Forum”.
A joint statement issued today by the co-rganisers of the event said the three-day Forum will provide a platform for international, regional and Qatari experts to discuss and address current and emerging energy and greenhouse gas challenges in Qatar and in the region.
The Forum will be set up not as a traditional conference but as an interactive working forum with active participation from all delegates.
The goal of the Forum is to find practical solutions to meet energy and greenhouse gas challenges.
The inaugural Forum will discuss and provide recommendations on current, emerging and innovative technologies related to carbon capture and storage, alternative energies and energy efficiency relevant to Qatar and the Gulf region Members of internationally renowned academic, industrial and governmental institutions will be participating in this forum including but not limited to: Stanford University, UCLA, Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, TOTAL, Shell, Energy Research Centre, HEC School of Management, Texas A&M University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Qatar Foundation President Dr. Mohammed Fathy Saoud reiterated that education and research programs offered in Education City are focused on providing quality human resources to meet the needs of the Energy Sector and organizations engaged in the protection of the environment.
He added, “The creation of Qatar Research Institute for Energy and Environment and the organization of the present Forum are important milestones that Qatar Foundation believes will lay the foundation for a sustained long-term framework for development of energy resources and protection of the environment.” Alex Dodds, President & General Manager, ExxonMobil Qatar Inc. said,
“Qatar continues to be an example to the rest of the world. Through teamwork and technology, the accomplishments here have helped meet the worlds growing need for energy, bringing progress and prosperity to millions. Through this Forum, were taking action together to ensure that this progress and prosperity is achieved in a way that protects future generations.”
