Tissue-manufacturing Subsidiary Offsets Carbon through Purchase of Wind Power


, the tissue-manufacturing subsidiary of Cascades Inc., Canada,
succeeded in offsetting its CO2 emissions by purchasing 11 million kWh of wind
power. The company closed this deal on 1st June with , a subsidiary of
Iberdrola SA of Spain.

The
mentions that paper-manufacturing firms make up the 5th most energy-intensive
business sector. Steve Ott of Cascades stated that this was one factor which
led to the companys present move. The company has decided to (renewable energy certificates), said Ott.

Such wind credits are intended to reduce GHG emissions by promoting
the use of wind as a source of energy rather than fossil fuels that would
release harmful GHG emissions.

The current step by Cascades Inc. will cut CO2
emissions by 15 million pounds per annum, which is around 25% of the companys
overall emissions. In other words, the offset would equal saving of 1.85
million trees.
