AUBURN, Alabama — Auburn University has been awarded $1.8 million from the U.S. Department of Defense to help develop a plan for sequestering carbon — the capturing of carbon and storing it safely away from the atmosphere — in longleaf pine forests on U.S. military bases, the university announced this morning.
Lisa Samuelson, director of the Center for Longleaf Pine Ecosystems in Auburns School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences, will lead the project. Collaborators include the USDA Forest Services Southern Research Station and the University of Florida and overall study grant totals $2.4 million.
