UK says no to coal power stations without carbon capture and storage

| Sourced From |

UK Energy and Climate Change Minister Ed Miliband is calling for the Government to adopt proposals that would say no to any new coal-fired power stations without carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology.

A new levy mechanism introduced in the Budget will raise funds to support up to three CCS projects in addition to the Governments existing plans to build a post-combustion demonstrator.

Within five years of CCS technology being independently judged to be technically and commercially viable, coal-fired power stations in the UK should undertake a full scale retrofit, he added.

In a nod to environmentalists who criticise any implementation of CCS technology, Miliband said that coal is necessary part of the countrys energy mix.
