Environmental charity Friends of the Earth has said that the current carbon taxing system needs reforming to help businesses become energy efficient.
Economy campaigner for the group Simon Bullock suggested that taxes on businesses’ central heating systems use is based on permits, which means that firms carbon output is not standardised.
These fluctuations in cost make it difficult for companies to work out how much energy they are using, which means it is harder to address how to cut back, it was explained.
Mr Bullock was commenting on a recent report from EEF, the manufacturer’s organisation, which proposed a reform of the carbon taxing system in order to encourage the increased use of renewable energy within the business sector.
“We agree with EEF – and the government, as well, I’d expect – that they need to look at and reform how energy taxes work, but how you do that is quite complicated,” he added.
