IT departments ill-prepared for carbon reduction scheme

Last week, the deadline passed for businesses and public sector bodies to register for the government’s Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme.

But while IT has an important role to play in reducing organisations carbon emissions, analysts have warned that the sector is not prepared for the legislation, which will punish those who do not decrease their fuel consumption.

According to the Environment Agency, datacentres account for a quarter of the IT sectors emissions, and could therefore potentially face large increases in running costs due to the CRC. However, research conducted within the IT sector shows businesses have not yet considered the possibility of increased data storage costs.
