The Commerce Commission has issued guidelines aimed at helping stop exploitation of environmental concerns.
It says claims about carbon offsets and being carbon neutral must be fully explained to consumers to comply with the Fair Trading Act.
The commission says people have different ideas of what carbon neutral means.
It wants companies to be able to substantiate any claims they make about their products, including suggestions of official endorsement of a company’s green credentials, or of being carbon neutral in future.
Businesses face fines of up to $200,000 for breaching the Act.
The commission this week issued a compliance notice to Meridian for marketing its electricity as carbon neutral.

OK its great to comment on Carbon Offsets. But who cares? How can I reach a larger audience? I am desperate, Dan. How can I tell it like it is. Most of what you read here is a load of bollocks. I care. I look and listen and the comment. Please help me.
