Scotland could take the lead in pioneering “carbon capture” energy projects, First Minister Alex Salmond has said.
He said the country was ready to strengthen its “lead” in Europe on green energy technology one week after the UK Government announced plans for four demonstration projects in Britain.
Carbon capture aims to absorb and store harmful emissions from industries such as coal-fired power stations.
Mr Salmond said: “Europe recognises that through our natural resources we are leading the green, clean energy revolution.
“Our potential and readiness to capitalise on the capture and safe storage of carbon is the next step.”
