Bonn – The UN Climate Change Secretariat says greenhouse gas emissions from industrialised countries increased in 2007, continuing the upward trend of the previous six years.
The secretariat said in a statement on Wednesday that greenhouse gas emissions of 40 reporting industrialised countries rose by 1% from 2006 to 2007.
The 2007 emissions are about 4% below 1990 levels, but there was a 3% growth in emissions in the period from 2000-2007.
Yvo de Boer, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change says the numbers underscore “the urgent need to seal a comprehensive, fair and effective climate change deal in Copenhagen in December”.
That conference will seek to reach a treaty to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol.
