Kiribati President Anote Tong says his country supports Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Tong made the remarks on Tuesday while meeting with Legislature President Wang Jin-pyng. Kiribati is one of Taiwan’s 23 allies.
In a speech on climate change, Tong first expressed his condolences to the victims of Typhoon Morakot, which swept through southern Taiwan last year. He said that Kiribati is also an island nation affected by climate change. Tong said the world has to work together to combat global warming.
Tong said, “Climate change is a global challenge requiring global solutions. To succeed, international collaborative efforts in this regard must involve every nation, every country, every single individual. The international community has now embraced Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly. It must do likewise and embrace Taiwan’s participation in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change processes.”
Meanwhile, Tong said that Kiribati and Taiwan have solid relations. He also thanked the assistance Taiwan has been giving to his country. Tong said he looked forward to further cooperation between the two countries.
“I want to reaffirm here my government’s deep commitment to working closely with Taiwan on matters of common concern at the regional and international levels, the fact that our relations are founded on mutual respect for sovereignty, our countries share a tradition of democracy, respect for the rule of law and respect for human rights. These provide for a very solid and firm foundation upon which we can build these relations,” said Tong.
Tong said that Kiribati has plans to hold an international meeting on climate change in October. He said he hoped Taiwan would join in the meeting or co-host it with his country.
