CO2 emissions showed record decrease in the wake of economic slump

Japan CO2 emissions originating from energy consumption had been down, this is the largest decline since 1965

TOKYO, JAPAN –The Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry announced October 30 that Japan’s CO2 emissions originating from energy consumption had been down 6.7% year on year to 1,138 million tons in fiscal 2008, while they accounted for 89% of Japan’s greenhouse gas emissions. This is the largest decline since 1965, the earliest year for which statistics are available.

Underlying this record decrease is the economic slump, with 86% of the drop attributable to sluggish business activities. By contrast, emissions from commercial and household activities are on the rise. Thus, this is “not a result of Japan’s concerted efforts to balance economic development with environmental conservation,” according to the agency, which conducted the survey.
