Mining giant Newmont Mining Corporation has signed a 50-year carbon offset pilot project with listed greenhouse abatement company CO2 Group Ltd.
CO2 Group uses mallee trees to create a permanent forest carbon sink.
CO2 Australia chief executive Andrew Grant said the company had been selected by the Asia Pacific arm of Newmont to run the project due to its “proven track record of delivering carbon sequestration projects”.
Newmont acting vice-president Philip Stephenson said the company had been investigating ways to manage its carbon emissions for some time.
Mr Stephenson said CO2 Group was an accredited abatement provider with experience in providing carbon solutions for large businesses.
Shares in CO2 Group were down half a cent, or 2.04 per cent, at 24 cents at 1452 AEDT on Tuesday.
