Edmonton… Alberta is being recognized by a U.S. energy and environment organization for its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through carbon capture and storage technology.
The Aspen Institute awards recognize excellence for those making a real contribution to innovation, implementation and communication of energy and environmental solutions. Energy Minister Mel Knight is traveling to Aspen, Colorado on March 26 to accept the Government Award on behalf of the Province at a ceremony highlighting the three-day Aspen Environment Forum.
“This award acknowledges that we’re on the right track and are indeed leaders when it comes to environmentally responsible resource development,” said Knight. “Carbon capture and storage will play a major role in Alberta’s efforts to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a real honour to have Alberta’s hard work recognized by the Aspen Institute.”
Six recipients will be recognized at the annual ceremony on March 27. The five other recipients are:
Corporate Energy Generation - A123Systems;
Corporate Energy Efficiency - Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.;
Non-governmental Organization - Confederation of Indian Industry - Sohrabi Green Business Centre;
Visual Art and Design - The Extreme Ice Survey; and
Individual Thought Leadership - Van Jones.
The Energy and Environment Awards are held during the 2009 Aspen Environment Forum, March 25 - 28. Knight will attend the forum, which brings together more than 300 thought leaders, scientists, journalists, academics, policy makers and citizens. The forum is presented by the Aspen Institute and National Geographic. While in Aspen, Knight will also meet with American and other international leaders on energy and environment issues.
The estimated cost of the trip for Knight and his executive assistant is $8,000. Additional information about the Aspen Institute and the Aspen Environment Forum is available at www.aspeninstitute.org.
