MITSUI GETTING INTO CARBON TRADING IN JAPAN

TOKYO, Jun 22, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) In its first entry into the Japanese market for carbon trading , Mitsui & Co. (TSE:8031) will help a Mie Prefecture lumber mill lower its carbon dioxide emissions, generating credits Mitsui will be able to later sell to firms looking to offset their CO2 output.

Japan approves 2 green projects for carbon offsets

TOKYO, Oct 31 (Reuters) – Japan has approved two reafforestation projects in China and Moldova to provide Japanese fund suppliers U.N. carbon offsets to help them reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Japan utilities may join trial CO2 scheme

TOKYO, Oct 24 (Reuters) – Each Japanese utility will consider participating in the planned domestic trial carbon dioxide (CO2) trading scheme, keeping in mind the industry’s voluntary goals under the Kyoto Protocol, the chairman of an industry association said on Friday.

Japan Government Approves Voluntary C02-Trading Trial (Update1)

Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) — Prime Minister Taro Aso’s government today approved a carbon-trading trial in Japan, the world’s fourth-largest polluter, allowing companies to set their own emission-reduction targets.

Japan to Carbon-Label its Consumer Goods

Not too long ago it was announced that Sapporo, a Japanese beer company will start labeling its products with the amount of co2 emitted during the production and disposal process. Now Japan is planning to extend the practice of carbon-labeling to other consumer goods as well.

Japan to Carbon-Label its Consumer Goods

Starting April 2009, consumer goods such as beverages and detergents will carry information about the amount of carbon emissions associated with the production and delivery cycle. The exact number of goods that will be marked with the carbon footprint information is yet to be finalized.

A trade ministry official said:

“We hope that displaying carbon footprints will raise awareness among consumers as well as companies of their emissions and motivate them to emit less C02,”

Other countries that have adopted the system of carbon-labeling products include Britain and France.

Cogeneration Users and Japanese Government Dispute over Calculation of Emissions Reductions

Before the Japanese government can decide on a carbon trading scheme, it has to figure out whos got it right on emissions calculations.

Firms using cogeneration systems blame the government for miscalculating the carbon cuts they have realized. These firms, along with gas companies that sell cogeneration generators, believe the governments formula for estimating emissions isnt appropriate. The amount of emissions reduced can vary depending on the type of power plant used to generate electricity.
