Implications

CSX announced that it will reduce CO2 emissions per revenue ton-mile by 8% by 2011; a neat trick considering its fuel efficiency as measured in revenue ton-miles per gallon fell by 2% from last years average efficiency during the first quarter and is expected to fall even more in the second quarter. Before the recent decline in traffic however, CSX had achieved a remarkable record of improving its fuel efficiency.

Japans CO2 Goal: Not So Shabby After All?

An offer by Prime Minister Taro Aso of Japan this week to cut emissions by 15 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of the next decade prompted an immediate outpouring of dismay from United Nations climate officials, European Union policy makers and environmentalists.
