A basic carbon calculator offers a ballpark figure of a person’s, business’s or household’s “carbon footprint” that is, all the greenhouse gases emitted either directly or on one’s behalf. A good carbon calculator will offer tips for minimizing your carbon footprint and many will allow you to calculate how to offset it. There are limits to what a carbon calculator can provide, though; you should consider your calculation an estimate only. It helps if you have accurate information before you start, such as a precise idea of how much energy you use at home or how many miles you drive in a day.

For those curious about their carbon footprint, basic carbon calculators abound across the web, but none have really been all that successful or effective. The Almanac, a New York-based startup that presented at our Green:Net conference last week, thinks it can do better using a more automated and holistic approach. While most carbon calculators rely on users own estimates and require them to enter all their own carbon footprint information, the Almanac is developing what it describes as a Mint.com of carbon emissions.

For a small business wanting to do the right thing by the environment, its useful to be able to calculate the firms carbon footprint. That means expressing all business activities in their carbon dioxide equivalent emissions, which gives the firm a way to measure its environmental impact, and track progress in adopting sustainable business practices.
