SkyBitz(R), the leading remote asset tracking and information management service provider, is assisting transportation providers in reducing carbon dioxide emissions through the utilization of remote asset management solutions in light of stricter clean air and clean energy laws.
SkyBitz calculates that remote asset management has the potential to reduce approximately 6.33 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions each year from trucking fleets on the road today.
In 2007, the U.S. Department of Transportation reported roughly 2.2 million tractors and 5.3 million trailers on the road. In all, these assets traveled more than 145 billion miles and consumed over 28.5 billion gallons of diesel fuel.
In addition, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that a gallon of diesel fuel emits 22.2 pounds of carbon dioxide when burned. As a result, in 2007 approximately 632.7 billion pounds of carbon dioxide were emitted into the atmosphere from the 28.5 billion gallons of diesel fuel.
According to the recent CSMG report, “The Impact of Asset Management Technology on the Trucking Industry,” if every trailer in the U.S. had an asset tracking solution such as SkyBitz GLS solution, drivers could shave off 1.45 billion miles driven per year by eliminating out-of-route miles and searching for trailers and other assets. This would generate a potential reduction of approximately 6.33 billion pounds of carbon dioxide emissions from tractors and trailers as reported by SkyBitz.
“SkyBitz has always been committed to new and innovative ways to make the transportation industry more efficient. Today, reducing carbon dioxide emissions is becoming an important operational factor for trucking companies, and thus a key focus for SkyBitz,” said Homaira Akbari, President and CEO of SkyBitz.
“Congestion costs the industry $8 billion a year, and it’s growing at 8% to 10% per year,” said Ray Kuntz, Chairman of American Trucking Association’s Executive Committee, Immediate Past Chairman for ATA and member of the SkyBitz Board of Directors. “Mobile asset tracking provides the industry an effective tool to improve operational productivity while cutting carbon dioxide emissions,” said Kuntz, who testified on climate change at a hearing this month before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
