Austin Texas, USA: 4 November 2009 – Global Climate Strategies, a Texas based carbon developer; is pleased to announce that it has achieved validation from a UNFCCC (United Nations Foundation Convention on Climate Change approved Designated Operational Entity (DOE) using UNFCCC’s new AMS II.J. methodology “Demand-side activities for efficient lighting technologies”. With this accreditation, Global Climate Strategies is the first entity in the entire global community to receive such validation.
The Texas-based project, focused on replacing 1,000,000 lights in low income housing; achieved a favorable validation report from the UNFCCC DOE on 24th June 2009 and is currently in full-scale deployment. This project will reduce 29,680 t/CO2e per year and 296,801 t/CO2e over the project’s 10 year life. In addition, to date this is the first energy efficiency project to be registered with the VCS.
“At the time that we started the project we recognized energy efficiency as a project category that was not receiving the most attractive pricing within VCS. However, as Texas is the largest emitter of GHG of any state in the U.S., we were confident that a validated offset program in this state would be valuable in a future compliance market.”Jeff Smith GCS’s Director Global Climate Strategies carried out the emissions reduction development cycle for the CFL project, prepared the Project Design Document (PDD) including additionality assessment, sustainability modeling through stakeholder consultations to validation. The first verification is planned in 2010.
“We support the recent advancements in federal Cap and Trade legislation and evolving energy policy. Energy Efficiency will clearly play a bigger role in coming years to reduce emissions, promote energy independence, and keep more money in the pockets of consumers with the tightest budgets.” Barry McConachie GCS’s Chief Executive Officer
Global Climate Strategies was validated for and intends to register the project with the Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS). Global Climate Strategies will then expand this same program in Clean Development Mechanism (CMD) eligible countries.
