Lecture to advise on how to reduce carbon footprints

For those who want to learn ways to be more ecologically conscious, the Marriott Library will be hosting a brown bag lecture focused on the “Global Ecological Crisis and Reducing Personal Footprints.”

Given by Fred Montague, the lecture will focus on ways that residents of Salt Lake City can help to keep pollution to a minimum and reduce their carbon footprints.

“Being that we’re going into the time of year where the air quality is so bad in the Salt Lake Valley, this lecture will help people act locally and here on campus to help reduce their footprint,” said Karren Nichols, the sustainability coordinator for the Marriott Library.

The lecture will be the first of a two-part series, with the second lecture occurring in the spring.

“Dr. Montague usually does a combined lecture on his gardening series in conjunction with reducing your personal footprint, and in the spring he will be doing a brown bag on gardening,” Nichols said.

The library has hosted a number of brown bag lectures over the years, and uses them as a way to rub shoulders while also learning something new.

“It’s a great way, especially during the winter months when people aren’t outside, to combine a little personal education and fun,” Nichols said. “We just have lunch and get to know each other.”

Montague, a professor at the U, has given many lectures on campus about eco-conscious practices.

“His lectures are (focused) locally, and what you can do in your day-to-day life to reduce your personal footprint,” Nichols said.

This talk should help people become more aware of what they do, said James Bowman, a senior in film studies. “It will get people to think about how they live.”

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch to enjoy while Montague speaks.
