Report proposes 60% carbon reduction by 2030

A new report has proposed that the government should aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 60 per cent by 2030.

The Fourth Carbon Budget Report by the Committee on Climate Change was published yesterday (December 7th), outlining ways for the government to tighten its carbon reduction targets.

Although the report focuses on the UK’s emissions in the years 2023-27, it also suggested increasing the 34 per cent reduction target for 2020 to be raised 37 per cent.

It suggests the targets could be achieved with “radical decarbonisation and reform of the electricity market”, which would include major investment in renewable energy technology and could reduce the carbon intensity of electricity by 90 per cent by 2030.

Other ideas include ensuring that all homes are insulated with loft and cavity wall insulation and that half of homes have solid wall insulation.

Chair of the committee, Lord Adair Turner commented: “The case for action on climate change is as strong as ever: climate science remains robust and suggests that there are very significant risks if we do not cut emissions.”
