Residents will soon to be able to benefit from greener parking in London after Camden Council introduced a reward scheme for those with low-emission vehicles.
The cost of a parking permit will now be based on how much CO2 a vehicle emits. Residents are currently being informed about the changes by letter, and the new charges will take effect for all permit renewals from 2nd November 2009.
The changes to the charges for parking spaces on council estates are similar to the council’s emissions-based scheme for on-street parking, which came into effect in August 2007.
Camden Council consulted with tenants and leaseholders about the proposals through District Management Committees and, as a result of these discussions, the Executive decided to phase in the new charging structure over a three-year period to give car owners more time to adjust.
These permit schemes are part of a broader package of green transport measures already adopted on Camden’s housing estates. This includes the introduction of bicycle storage facilities and car clubs for residents on some estates.
Cllr James King, Executive Member for Housing Services, Camden Council said: “We are taking a greener approach to charges for parking permits on housing estates. Linking the charge to the carbon emitted by the vehicle will prompt residents to think about the cars they choose and the impact it has on the environment.
“The effects of climate change are very real. The new parking permit scheme can help to drive a change in behaviour and encourage motorists to take account of environmental issues such as climate change and air quality.”
