IT efficiency should play into larger carbon-reducing strategies

Green computing initiatives should play into larger, overarching carbon-reduction strategies at major businesses, experts have said, as firms look to support new sustainable practices with the appropriate technology, which can include hosting servers offsite, as well as desktop and server virtualisation.

In the Green Quadrant report, Sustainable Technology Services 2011, Stuart Neumann, an analyst for green researchers Verdantix, said more focus has been put on developing new sustainable technologies, rather than optimising the IT supporting businesses.

“Our research found that large multi-nationals and city leaders want IT support for new sustainability initiatives such as electric vehicle infrastructure, offshore wind farms and global carbon management systems,” he said.

“Technology investment in these new areas is much larger than spend on green IT projects like data centre energy efficiency and PC power management.”

However, when firms realise the financial incentives associated with new IT features such as virtualisation, cloud hosting and software as a service, they have often adhered to such new technologies.

“Business benefit is the key driver and carbon savings have to add financial benefits because companies will not invest in sustainability initiatives if it means they will lose money,” Neumann said.

With more attention being paid to business impact on the environment each year, especially in data centres, Neumann argued that it’s becoming increasingly important to establish metrics and monitoring software in companies to bring down carbon footprints.

As noted by eWeek Europe, the government’s Energy Efficiency Scheme has brought the importance and fiscal benefits of data centre efficiency to the attention of many business owners and operators.
