Small building firms need to be given more skills in sustainable practices to make sure that they can meet the challenge for low carbon, energy efficient homes.
This is one of the ways that the UK can make all homes zero carbon by 2016 in line with government goals, according to Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders.
Speaking at the Cut the Carbon webinar yesterday (October 20th), an event that advised businesses on how to invest in skills and reduce carbon footprints, the expert feared that currently there is not enough consumer demand for green buildings to meet these targets.
He also suggested that there is a lack of knowledge and skills in the industry to do the job.
“The problem is that most small firms don’t belong to any bodies so they are not getting the regular training that will be required,” he added.
“We need to look at the quality assurance of the builders doing the work and the possibility of regulation at some point in the medium to long-term.”
