A new programme of initiatives designed to reduce carbon emissions and cut costs has been launched by the Carbon Trust.
According to the organisation, its £15 million Industrial Energy Efficiency Accelerator (IEEA) programme has already attracted the backing of prominent companies including Britvic, Tarmac and Highland Spring.
Tesco, the UK’s largest retail outlet, and the Food and Drink Federation are two other high-profile organisations which have voiced their backing for the initiative.
Dr Mark Williamson, Carbon Trust director of innovations, said: “More than a quarter of the UK’s carbon emissions come from industry and we’ve got to find new opportunities to reduce them. The way to make truly substantial cuts is to get to the very heart of manufacturing.
“By rethinking the way manufacturers operate from the ground up we plan to spearhead a low carbon industrial revolution that will not only reduce emissions but will also increase demand for innovation, generate jobs and cut costs.”
Up to three million tonnes of carbon emissions are expected to be slashed from the manufacturing industry by the programme.
