Carbon permits tip investors into generating power from rubbish

| Sourced From TimesOnline.co.uk |

BRITAINs path to a low-carbon future may not be found in wind farms, but rather in our rubbish. The pressure on the government to reduce the volume of waste dumped in landfills, along with huge financial incentives for the companies involved, is fuelling a boom in the waste-to-energy sector.

Waste-to-energy is a catch-all term for ways of turning rubbish into power and byproducts such as fertiliser. Investors like the idea. Unlike wind and sun, rubbish is something we produce a lot of, regardless of the time of year or the weather.

There is a fundamental error in this idea — incineration is a net source of carbon, not a sink of carbon! Recycling saves four times more energy/carbon than recycling off-sets through the power generated. But the only way to create the required cut in carbon emissions to avoid damaging climate change is to reduce the use of energy and materials in the economy as a whole, and of course incineration is the complete antithesis to this approach.
