All public sector vehicles to be low carbon by 2020

The Scottish Government has proposed converting all public sector vehicles to low carbon by 2020.
The plans are included in a consultation announced this week to widen the use of low-carbon vehicles in Scotland, as part of transport’s contribution to reduce emissions.

It also calls for 95% of all new vehicles to be low carbon in 2020. The proposals follow last week’s passing of the Climate Change (Scotland) Bill, which sets ambitious targets of a 42% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, rising to 50% by 2050.

Climate change minister, Stewart Stevenson, said: ‘We all have a role to play in tackling climate change, but the public sector must be seen to set the standard.

‘This 2020 target will not only ensure that the public sector is stepping up to the plate on its transport emissions, but also help create a market which can drive further development of low carbon technology.’

The consultation states that it is possible for the public sector bus fleet to ‘entirely consist of LCVs by 2020’.

The Scottish Government is also developing proposals to change the bus service operators grant scheme to encourage increase investment in lower-emission and higher-quality vehicles in the commercial sector.
