New York — The presumption that the new U.S. administration shares Canada’s desire to immediately develop a North American approach to cap and trade greenhouse-gas emissions overlooks critical points (PM Moves Fast To Build Bridges With Obama – Nov. 7).
America has more issues to resolve than ever before. Why would it want to complicate its domestic cap and trade initiative with an outside interference? Barack Obama and Stephen Harper have very dissimilar political pedigrees. Why would the former want to dole out political favours to the latter?
Given Canada’s spotty track record on climate change, why should America believe that Canada will be a credible partner in a North American approach? Jeffrey Simpson recently wrote that Canada needs America to save it from its own climate-change policy incoherence. Uncle Sam may not be casting a life preserver any time soon.
