VADODARA: Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) is all set to set the ball rolling to earn carbon credits. The civic body is among others chosen by the state government for the purpose.
According to sources in the civic body, Gujarat Urban Development Company (GUDC) that is coordinating efforts in this directions as a nodal agency has been in touch with various civic bodies for the purpose.
While solid waste disposal systems that reduce greenhouse gases remain the focus of the initiative, sources said that the civic body had several other issues that could earn it carbon credits. These include the energy efficient street-lighting system that was introduced recently and the city buses that operate on compressed natural gas.
Sources said that the city buses had replaced diesel-run buses of the state transport and have led to several persons not using their two-wheelers to travel on city roads. “This reduces pollution and also keeps a control on the rise in the sale of petrol in the city,” said an official.
VMC is also set to inaugurate a power generation plant at its Atladara sewage treatment plant. The gases released from the plant will be used to generate power making it eco-friendly.
Sources said that the GUDC is taking up the issue of carbon credits for civic bodies World Bank’s Community Development Carbon Fund. The World Bank in turn will forward the proposal to the Clean Development Mechanism Board of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change seeking its approval to sell the carbon emission reductions. GUDC has already appointed consultants for the purpose.
