U.S. efforts to curb emissions of greenhouse gases mean Canada will have to put a price on carbon and set up a national cap-and-trade system, an official panel said Thursday.
Canadas Conservative government wants to fight global warming by reducing the intensity of emissions rather than capping them. But the National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy said this was not a realistic approach, given what was happening in the United States.
President Barack Obama plans to have a cap and trade system in place by 2012. This would limit the amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases that polluters could emit, forcing them to buy permits if they wanted to produce more.
