PGNiG working on storing carbon dioxide in mines

The management board of Polish Oil and Gas (PGNiG) believes that in 2012 it might launch a pilot program of storing carbon dioxide in its mines

However, before undertaking such operations, it is necessary to approve relevant regulations concerning such activities and companies representing the energy sector would have to submit their interest in storing carbon dioxide.

For the time being PGNiG did not inform about the planned outlays on this purpose and its expected rate of return. “We offer relevant underground infrastructure and on-ground installation for transport. The closer the mine is to a power plant, the more profitable it is to store carbon dioxide,” said Michał Szubski, president of PGNiG.

In his opinion, new power blocks should be located within a maximum of a dozen kilometers from the mines, which are located in the west and south of Poland. The firm is also preparing for a project to gasify coal, which will take four years to be completed and will cost up to zł.4 billion.
