Peru To Sell Carbon Credits To APEC Economies

LIMA, Oct 27 (Bernama) — Peru plans to sell carbon credits worth about US$8.4 billion to fund environmental protection, and the economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) would be potential buyers, China’s Xinhua news agency reported quoting the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism as saying Monday.

“In the APEC, the carbon issue and the climate change are led by New Zealand, but Australia and Peru follow it closely, because they are countries with a relevant participation in this aspect,” Peruvian Vice Minister of Tourism Pablo Lopez said.

Lopez added that the programme “Carbon Impressions,” presented by Australia during the 35th APEC Tourism Working Group Meeting in Cusco, Peru, on Oct 13-17, would be favourable for the Andean country.

Due to its geography, Peru was one of the countries most greatly affected by the climate change, not only in the Amazons, but also in coastal and mountainous areas, Lopez said.

“For this reason, it is necessary for Peru to make a commitment of the leadership in this issue, because there are no predictions of the real impact of the phenomenon (climate change),” Lopez explained.

It was necessary that the National Environmental Fund perform an effective management on the sale of carbon credits, while developing other projects such as those aimed at reforestation.

It was also urgent to establish norms to frame the work, in case the complicated legal frame to sell the credits would make investors withdraw, Lopez added.
