Nedbank is tops in South Africa’s 2009 carbon disclosure leadership index, which ranks the JSE’s biggest 100 companies on the basis of “frank and transparent” disclosure on issues related to climate change.
Membership of the index is one incentive for the JSE’s top 100 companies to participate in the South African leg of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), managed locally by the National Business Initiative.
Sixteen companies qualified for membership of the local leadership index this year.
New entrants to the 2009 index include Sappi, Old Mutual, Sanlam, Santam, Anglo Platinum and Netcare.
Bumped off the index this year are Anglo American, Remgro, Murray & Roberts, Massmart, Pick n Pay, SABMiller, Medi-Clinic, Liberty Life, FirstRand and Standard Bank.
The CDP this year piloted a performance scoring methodology. The performance scores separately assessed the nature of a company’s climate mitigation and adaptation actions.
Six companies qualified for the performance ranking but not the leadership index, including SABMiller. Four companies made the grade for the leadership index but not the performance ranking, including Sanlam. – Ingi Salgado
