Minibus taxis will be exempt for the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions tax to be raised on passenger vehicles and double-cab and small pick-ups from September 1, with the jury still out on large single-cab pick-ups, often used as company workhorses within various sectors of the economy.

Finality was reached only on Tuesday on the inclusion of double-cab and small pick-ups in the tax regime.

The CO2 tax is expected to earn the national fiscus an estimated R450-million in the 2010/11 financial year. Cars and bakkies will be taxed, based on their certified CO2 emissions, at R75 a g/km for each g/km above 120 g/km.

National Treasury spokesperson Jabulani Sikhakhane says the definition of passenger cars used for the purposes of the CO2 tax includes all categories of light commercial vehicles, but excludes light trucks.
