Swedish PM to focus on CO2 emissions as EU president

Fredrik Reinfeldt will serve as EU president for the next six months and has pledged to make a breakthrough at the upcoming UN summit on global warming.

Sweden’s prime minister said that climate change is the most important global challenge facing this generation.

The Scandinavian country has set a high standard on emissions – it has the best record on renewable energy in Europe and has already implemented carbon taxes for commercial enterprises and consumers as long ago as 1991.

World leaders will be tasked with formulating the terms to a successor to the Kyoto Project, which expires in 2012, in Copenhagen this December and Mr Reinfeldt will have a big role to play as the EU and Sweden’s primary delegate.

“The financial crisis and climate change, with the preparation of the Copenhagen conference, will be our main priorities,” he said.

Commenting on the need for consensus over the issue of CO2 emission cuts, Mr Reinfeldt added: “We need a global answer to this global problem.”
