List-maker though I am, I started these columns in January with no real plan for my monthly challenges. Since so much of the way we all live contributes to global heating and climate chaos, I figured Id just take on my major decisions as they came up.
I still think its a good approach. Considering greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a routine part of decision-making has implanted a green filter inside my brain. Using it is fast becoming second nature to me.
But one of my readers took issue with my choice of challenges a while back. Why focus on garbage or home lighting, he asked (referring to previous columns), when the biggest source of greenhouse gases, especially in rural places, is transportation?
I had to take the question seriously. Going right to the heart of the problem makes sense. But is transportation the bogeyman? That depends, not surprisingly, on how the calculations are done.
