Northern Territory tourism operator Wayoutback Desert Safaris announced Monday it will now fully fund carbon credit payments for paying customers.
The Australian tour company said the move comes as Tourism NT stops its Carbon Offset Pilot program.
Wayoutback Desert Safaris managing director Don Wait said the company’s participation in Tourism NT’s pilot during the 08/09 travel year was highly successful, in particular with European and American clientele.
It will now automatically pay for the amount of carbon credits equal to the emissions per passenger trip when the customer purchases one of the tours offered by the operator through any distribution channel.
“We anticipate this will cost around $3.29 per customer, or approx $20,000 per annum on current projections” said Wait.
Pre-purchased and pre-paid carbon credits will act as proof that it is “fully aware of the environmental cost of its operation”, the company said. Carbon credits will be purchased from the LMS Generation Pty Ltd abatement project in the Northern Territory.
