Papua New Guinea has no clear plan on carbon trading, despite taking a lead internationally on carbon emissions reduction scheme.
PNG’s prime minister Sir Michael Somare founded the Coalition of Rainforest Nations, a group of more than 40 countries that calls on industrialised countries to pay for the job forests do to absorb carbon emissions.
But PNG’s National Forest Authority says there are no national plans for a carbon trading scheme.
It says PNG’s Environment and Conservation Department office is working in isolation and there is no cooperation with the Forest Authority, which manages the country’s forests.
The Forest authority’s comments came during an ongoing inquiry into the violence targeting Asian businesses in May this year, and the employment of illegal immigrants on logging sites.
