Former Australian treasurer casts doubt over carbon trading

Australia’s former federal treasurer, Peter Costello, says the government’s proposed carbon trading scheme could be threatened by the changing economic situation.

The federal government has promised to begin implementing an emissions trading scheme for Australia by 2010.

But speaking to the American Club in Sydney last night, Mr Costello said climate change is no longer the sole economic threat.

“In November 2007 maybe climate change did look like the great economic issue of the age, but its not looking that way now,” he said.

“Strangely enough I think Coalition probably do better if the election were held this November rather than last November.”
