Barangaroo to be carbon neutral

THE 22-hectare Barangaroo site at east Darling Harbour has been selected by the Clinton Climate Initiative’s climate positive development program, which aims to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions of large urban developments to below zero.

The State Government claims the redevelopment will produce more water than it uses and generate more renewable energy than it uses, while generating zero waste.

”Sydney’s new city waterfront precinct will join just 16 other developments around the world which are working with the Clinton Climate Initiative to be climate positive,” the NSW Planning Minister, Kristina Keneally, said.

In July the Government signed an agreement with the Clinton Foundation to speed up the use of low-emission technologies in government-owned buildings, as well as to seek sites for commercial-scale solar projects.

The optimistic targets for the environmental footprint of the site have emerged as the Government is faced with a large program to remediate heavily polluted parts of east Darling Harbour. Meanwhile, Cockle Bay remains one of the harbour’s most polluted areas, largely due to its long history as an industrial site.

The Barangaroo site will boast a water recycling unit which, along with reducing demand and maximising recycling, means it will be able to pump the excess water into the city water supply.
